Does the $0 SBR tax stamp apply to A9X builds?
Yes. As of January 2026, the federal tax on Short Barrel Rifles and suppressors dropped from $200 to $0. You still file an ATF Form 1 and wait for approval, but the $200 stamp fee is gone. The A9X is purpose-built for short-barrel 9mm PCC builds, so this change makes it dramatically cheaper to legally SBR a Colt-pattern build. Typical Form 1 approval times and all applicable state and local laws still apply — check your jurisdiction before filing.
What’s the difference between an 80% lower and a stripped lower?
An 80% lower requires machining at home with a jig before it can accept parts — it ships directly to your door, no FFL needed. A stripped lower is 100% machined and serialized, making it legally a firearm; it ships to a licensed FFL dealer for transfer.
Do I need an FFL to buy an 80% lower?
No. 80% lowers are not classified as firearms and ship directly to your home. The stripped lower does require FFL transfer. Check your state and local laws before purchasing.
What magazines does the A9X use?
Colt-pattern SMG 9mm magazines — a double-stack, double-feed design originally developed for the Colt SMG platform. These are purpose-built for subgun-length actions and feed more reliably under blowback recoil than single-feed Glock-pattern mags.
Can I use any AR-15 trigger?
