House passes federal bill for magazine ban

This past Wednesday, the House passed a huge gun control package that aims to strip millions of Americans of their Second Amendment Rights (it’s not just a simple magazine capacity ban). In a vote of 223 to 204, H.R. 7910, also known as the “Protecting Our Kids Act” was passed with extreme ease and speed (the bill had only been introduced eight days beforehand).

What does the bill aim to do? -Well, first up is an age ban — the anti-gunners want to prohibit anyone under the age of 21 from being able to buy just about any semi-auto long gun which will impact about 13 million people in America who are currently aged 18 - 20. -There would be a definitive ban on any “high capacity magazine” (what we refer to as standard). Grandfathered mags could be turned into the government for their tax funded buyback program.

  • A mandatory secured and safe storage of firearms policy would be enforced, also reducing the likelihood of a homeowner and their family being able to defend themselves from becoming victims should a bad actor come knocking. See Bill Burr’s subtle comments on “safe storage” of guns at home.
  • Not only will your guns have to be properly locked up and stored when not in use, the federal government can use this to not only fine you but justify seizures as well.
  • 80 percent lower receivers, pistol frames and 3D printed versions would also require background checks for these self-manufactured firearms.
  • The federal definition of what constitutes an “undetectable firearm” would change.
  • The legal definition of what constitutes a “firearm” would change to include gun parts kits and incomplete receivers like 80 lowers.

You can bet that we’re likely to experience another wave of panic buying magazines. We’ve seen it before and we’re seeing it now already. We’re experiencing an influx of sales on our end too for our lowers and pistol frames which is understandable because California is about to get hit by CA AB 879 this July 1 and CA AB1621 going into effect on July 1, 2024.

Last week we shared a comprehensive list of a lot of anti-gun bills that are on the table right now. Stakes are high and we’re on the cusp of losing even more parts of our basic 2A rights if we get complacent. We implore our readers to contact their elected representatives and if you don’t have faith in them, honestly we don’t blame you. That doesn’t mean commenting on Instagram posts will help move the needle, but donating to groups like Firearms Policy Coalition, Gun Owners of America and the National Shooting Sports Foundation will. These are the groups going to bat for us in the courts and if we don’t support them, no one else will.

FPC also has a great page where you can Take Action in an online grassroots sort of way by easily submitting letters of disapproval for legislation that undermines the Second Amendment. GOA has a good newsletter as well but both them and NSSF have historically filed several lawsuits against anti-gunner institutions, politicians, the government and won them.

Despite the odds, there are still politicians dedicated to real public safety solutions

There’s been a lot of talk online in the gun community about backstabbing republicans who appear to be more willing to compromise with democrats on bills that aim to limit the 2A while being packaged as an effort to address and curb gun violence. We shouldn’t have to tell you that there’s a lot on the line every week, but we will.

While these issues are deeply concerning for sure, it’s also important to not get tunnel vision and be distracted by the concern of negative news. Due to the Democrats being the majority in the House it is absolutely no surprise that they passed their ridiculous bills. Now, all eyes are on the Senate to see how many Republicans will stand up to defend the Constitution and how many will “compromise” with those who’d toss the 2nd Amendment to the wayside. Honestly, the numbers are very close so it’s important to apply pressure now. 60 votes will be needed to pass the Senate version of what the House passed this week. Here’s the current party division breakdown of the 117th Congress (Senate):

Democrats: 48 seats

Republicans: 50 seats

Independents: 2 seats

To give you a picture of how close we are to losing this legislative battle on Capitol Hill — those two independents have been caucusing for the Democrats which means they’d typically vote for any legislation favoring that direction. With VP Kamala Harris being the tiebreaker in the event of a stalemate in the Senate the Dems are currently the true majority which is a dangerous state of affairs for the Second Amendment.

Now that you know how potentially dire the situation is, our hope is that readers realize how vital every vote will be in the upcoming weeks. It’s easy to feel defeated and just panic buy to stock up, but that’s just treating a personal symptom and not addressing the overarching root of the problem in our country’s politics. Please reach out to your elected officials to let them know you do not support any form of compromise on H.R. 7910!
