Lessons Learned From Shooting At Michigan High School

Last month, there was a shooting at Oxford High School in Michigan where four students were killed and more than eight others were injured. It doesn’t matter if the shooter was a teenager, they don’t deserve the infamy from being named. All you need to know is that he was 15 years old and had parents of precarious nature.

Apparently, multiple warning signs from the student were ignored prior to the shooting, including the school’s own “threat assessment policy.”

Based on court documents, testimonies and two whistleblowers from former members of the school board, it was clear as early as last spring that the student should have been deemed a threat or at the very least properly addressed. He had expressed thoughts of suicide and killing others. A note was found on his desk that said “the thoughts won’t stop, help me.” Even up to one day before the shooting, the student was caught researching bullets on his cell phone. Of course, there’s a lot of ballistic data and science behind bullets so that’s innocuous on its own but added with all other factors, definitely alarming.

On the day of the shooting the student was actually at the school with a handgun in his backpack, bought by the father only a few days prior ( straw purchase). The family was there for a meeting with school officials. The parents were reluctant to take the student home from school and the shooting occurred shortly afterwards.

What is the point of gun control laws, ‘no guns’ signs at schools, or threat assessment policies if they don’t actually stop shootings from happening? This student was in need of help for months before he ever opened fire but was clearly left to his own devices. Had the school’s threat assessment policy actually been followed, the student should have been expelled long beforehand. (Not that an expulsion would have completely negated the threat or possibility of this student still carrying out a mass shooting.)

Disgustingly enough, the parents went on the lam after the shooting and were eventually arrested after being found hiding in a warehouse.

You’ve got movie theaters and now even gas stations that have police or armed private security that protect the public, why not make it a standard for schools too? Recognize the signs, folks. Teach your kids to pay attention to others and to be kind. Mayors Call On Lawmakers to Pass Stalled Gun Control

Mayors of 70 cities across the US which have suffered mass shootings in 2022 have called upon Senate leaders to pass stalled gun control legislation during the lame session but Democrats have expressed their doubts on how viable it would be to accomplish this before the new year.

Some of the more prolific city mayors have been demanding that an “assault weapons” ban be passed so that many semi-automatic weapons and standard capacities would be banned along with requiring background checks for the private transfer of firearms between individuals.

Proponents of gun control say that this does not infringe on the Second Amendment in any way and that the Background Check Expansion Act would close serious loopholes in the background check system. To that, we say, “poppycock!” (Insert eye rolling emoji)If you follow T.REX Arms’ fantastic political newsletter as well, their most recent one notes on how the key case rulings from the Supreme Court: West Virginia v. The EPA and NYSRPA v. Bruendealt a crushing blow to both past and future gun control policies.

TL;DR? Essentially, all future gun control laws and policies related to rifle features, magazine bans, serial numbers and more have to be held to the Bruen standard which goes back to the Second Amendment. Is it being infringed upon? “Any legal restrictions on gun ownership must have existed in founding-era laws to be legal.” That’s huge.

T.REX also notes that previously legislators in Tennessee had been hesitant to pass exceptionally pro-gun, freedom laws due to fear of attraction federal lawsuits. But now, the stage has been set and the roles have been reversed because of the Bruen decision — this new legal precedent has the Dems hesitant in passing any new gun control, though their financiers may be screaming and kicking for it.

Oregon DOJ Requests Delay Of New Gun Control Law, Cites Lack of Readiness

Remember in previous weeks we had talked about Oregon’s new all encompassing gun control law that basically ends legal ownership as we know it for Oregonians? (Slight dramatization) Well, that bill was called Measure 114 and it was set to go into effect this week, just yesterday in fact on Thursday, December 8, 2022.Leading up to today, there’s been some serious contention surrounding this bill as county sheriffs have come out saying that they won’t be enforcing the law due to lack of infrastructure or funding.

As a placeholder, the Oregon State Police has released a placeholder that is a website page which previews the gun permit process for its residents.

But for now the law seems to still be in limbo as first, a state judge had ordered a temporary restraining order to block Measure 114 from going into effect… less than 24 hours later a federal district judge ruled that it could go forward with a 30 day delay.

While this may seem frustrating, even though the federal judge did not issue a TRO, she is requiring there to be a more in-depth hearing before the law can move forward.

Everyone in Oregon has been scrambling this week. People have been flocking to gun stores in droves to stock up on guns and ammo prior to Thursday and law enforcement has been preparing training modules and the system set-up required to actually issue gun permits to residents. It’s such a mess to the point where the Oregon Department of Justice had also requested a temporary delay in order to create the infrastructure necessary for the program created by Measure 114. Local gun rights advocacy organizations as well as GOA (Gun Owners of America) are currently fighting tooth and nail over this law. More on this story as it develops in the coming weeks…

Biden Speaks Out Again At Gun Violence Vigil

Biden just spoke at the 10th Annual National Vigil for all Victims of Gun Violence this Wednesday. There is no argument that many mass shootings were tragic and unfair for its victims and their surviving family members.

But whenever Biden speaks out strongly against legal gun ownership to pander to the masses, we know that it causes some panic-buying to ensue shortly afterwards. With words like “The idea we still allow semi-automatic weapons to be purchased is sick, it’s just sick. It has no, no social redeeming value. Zero. None…” he’s certainly not helping the situation.

Once Republicans take control of the House of Representative in January, the possibility of Congress to pass further gun control may reduce even more.
